FULL FATHOM FIVE

APRIL - JUNE 2019

Logline:

A devised theater piece created by a group of actor/musicians about what took place before the start of Shakespeare's play The Tempest.

Scenic Artist Work:

I was part of a crew of 5 scenic artists in charge of bringing this vision to life. Since it was a devised piece the set was constantly changing and we were given a lot of liberties when it came to certain parts of the set.

We tried to make this show as environmentally friendly as possible. We did this by reusing cloth and materials from other shows, collecting driftwood and bones from beaches on the River Thames, finding logs to create alternative seating for children, etc. In the end we either put everything back into storage, used it around campus or recycled it properly.

When it came to the flooring we were given two reference images to work with. One of oil being mixed into water and the other of agates. With the help of sponges and a Hudson sprayer I used a combination of paints, water, and button polish to create an organic pattern.

We were asked to decorate the entire venue, so we used drift wood, and borrowed rope from various departments and created wind chimes that hung all over the theater. Over the center stage we took advantage of the hanging bars and created three layers of set dec to hand down on the actors to represent the wreckage of the ship from the Tempest. We also created alternative seating in the front row. We found cut down trees in the back of campus, rolled them to the shop, sanded them down and painted them to create new seating. Those are now sitting in the garden of the school.

Overall, this show took a lot of painting and scenincing in order to make everything on the set look like it had been weathered by the ocean.
